President's Message

June 28, 2010

Dear Friends,

My first anniversary as Safe Space President and Chief Executive Officer is June 30, 2010 -- and what a year it has been! Despite a challenging economy and the general downturn in philanthropy, we were still able to enhance our programs to meet new and emerging needs in our communities. For example, this year we developed a job-readiness program for domestic violence victims helping them secure their independence and safety. We have also expanded our programming at our Youth Drop-In Center in Far Rockaway, providing a wide range of recreation, education, and support services to help keep young people in that community engaged in safe and productive activities

But what I'm most excited about is that in July, we are moving into our brand-new, organizational headquarters on 162nd and Jamaica Avenue! Our new headquarters will house our administrative offices as well as all of our Jamaica-based services, which include Preventive Services, a Youth Drop-In Center, a range of Community Health programs, and our Mental Health clinic. This move will not affect our satellite offices in Far Rockaway and Richmond Hill, Queens. The Jamaica consolidation will help Safe Space provide more integrated services and will achieve significant cost savings by eliminating overlapping costs for occupancy, administrative staff, IT networks, and other infrastructure-related expenses.

The new headquarters is part of my strategy to enhance and develop Safe Space as an anchor institution in Southeast Queens, known for the quality and comprehensiveness of our services to children and families and for our innovation and leadership in service delivery. Safe Space will continue to be a place where all families, in whatever stage of stability or instability, will find opportunities to heal, unite, and develop. As always, our resources and expertise will go beyond addressing crisis situations and focus on the long-term emotional, physical and economic well-being of our clients.

This is time of transformation at Safe Space. I hope you will check out our website frequently to learn more and to get involved in all the exciting initiatives that are going on!

Sincerely,

Chris
