Community outreach includes extensive HIV/AIDS services:
- Case management for HIV-positive men and women, including referrals to primary care providers, support groups, adherence to medication regimes, and help with housing needs.
- Prevention, as employees make group and one-on-one presentations, provide condoms, encourage testing and make referrals for testing.
- Training and support for peer educators who provide community and street outreach, with a special focus on young people.
With alarming rates of HIV/AIDS among young minority women, Safe Space introduced Girl-to-Girl, a workshop series for African-American and Latina girls aimed at preventing HIV infection by addressing behavioral and socio-economic factors that negatively affect their health. Topics include ethnic/gender pride, assertiveness skills and HIV/AIDS education.
In total, the HIV/AIDS program reaches several thousand individuals each year.
