Volunteers bring their special talents to the Coalition and allow us to enhance our core services.
Court Advocacy: Trained volunteers spend one day a week at the Nassau County Courts offering assistance, support, and information to persons who seek orders of protection in family violence matters. Volunteers attend court advocate staff meetings.
Hospital Accompaniment: After a 40-hour training volunteers become advocates for sexual assault survivors and victims of domestic violence. Volunteers are scheduled to be on call for 24 hours periods to assist victims at local hospitals. Periodic supervisory meetings and ongoing trainings are also provided.
Office Assistants: Typing, data processing, filing, copying, and general office work.
Resource Development: Persons interested in fundraising can assist in the creation of events or projects by helping with mailings and clerical work, on an occasional basis, in the development department. Grant writing and research, for those with special skills, are also supported activities. Volunteers can also serve as members of the Board of Directors and on the President's Advisory Council.
Safe Home Volunteers: There are a variety of activities where volunteers can assist staff in the Safe Home. Interim house management provides short periods of relief to the house mangers and allows the volunteer to interact with the families. Volunteers engage children in play, help with schoolwork, do art projects, or read to them. Hours are flexible; however, volunteers must be available for training during regular work hours. Drivers are also needed to help clients go to court or the doctors and meet other obligations, and to food, shop or pick up or deliver donations.
The Speaker's Bureau: After extensive training, speakers provide programs in schools and the community. Survivors can serve on training panels and in working with the media. Training is ongoing and volunteers are asked to participate in monthly educational meetings.
We require a commitment of at least 18 months.
All persons interested in volunteering can contact the office to schedule attendance at a Volunteer Orientation program.
