Courtroom Advocacy

The Coalition's Courtroom Advocacy program provides advocacy in all Nassau County Courts to victims of domestic violence, dating violence, rape/sexual assault, and elder abuse. Advocates provide:

  • Emotional and psychological support in the often grueling process of obtaining an Order of Protection
  • Accompaniment in the courtroom, which can be an intimidating place for victims
  • Information about domestic violence and the use and limitations of protective orders
  • Referrals for a free consultation to obtain information about her legal rights or options, a legal assessment, or referrals
  • Assistance in the creation of a safety plan
  • Advocacy during interviews with the Assistant District Attorney or grand jury/trial testimony

Victims of domestic violence and rape/sexual assault may also receive direct representation, at no charge, from attorneys well versed in the complex dynamics of family abuse through the Coalition's Legal Services Center. These attorneys provide case intakes, consultations, case monitoring, and direct representation in proceedings involving:

  • Family offenses
  • Child custody/visitation
  • PINS petitions
  • Paternity proceedings
  • Divorce
  • Immigration
  • And other issues arising from the abuse
